How File Request Links Work (Voucher Uploads)
You need files from a client, collaborator, or field researcher. They don't have a file transfer account. Email attachments are too small. What do you do?
File request links (also called vouchers) solve this problem. They let anyone upload files to you—no account, no friction—while you maintain control and visibility.
The Problem: Clients Cannot Send Big Files Back
This is a workflow killer:
- You send a client a draft video for review
- They want to send you raw footage (50GB) in return
- Their email bounces. They don't have Dropbox. They ask, "Can you send me a link?"
Traditional file-sharing tools are one-directional: you send files to them. But what about the reverse?
What is a File Request Link (Voucher)?
A voucher is a unique, time-limited URL that allows anyone to upload files directly to you.
Key Features:
- No account required: Recipients just click and upload
- Size limits: You set the maximum file size per upload
- Expiry control: Links expire after a set period (7 days, 30 days, etc.)
- Tracking: You see exactly who uploaded what and when
Think of it like a "dropbox" in the old-school sense—a secure place where others can leave files for you.
Step-by-Step: How to Create and Use a Voucher
1. Create a Voucher
Log into TeraSender and navigate to Vouchers or File Requests. Click Create New Voucher.
2. Set Parameters
- Expiry date: How long should the link remain active?
- Max file size: What's the largest file guests can upload? (e.g., 100GB)
- Custom message: Add instructions for recipients ("Please upload the final edited video here")
3. Send the Link
Copy the voucher URL and send it via email, Slack, Teams, or text. Your recipient clicks the link, selects their files, and uploads.
4. Receive and Track
You get a notification when files are uploaded. View all submissions in your dashboard, download them, and archive if needed.
Best Practices
Use Clear Instructions
When you send the voucher link, include:
- What files you're expecting
- Naming conventions (e.g., "ClientName_ProjectName_Final.mp4")
- File format requirements
- Upload deadline
Set Reasonable Expiry Windows
Don't leave vouchers active indefinitely. A 7-14 day window is usually sufficient. This reduces security risk and keeps your workspace tidy.
Security Tips
- Verify links before sharing: Make sure you're sending the correct voucher URL
- Use trusted facilities: Only share vouchers with known collaborators
- Monitor uploads: Check your dashboard regularly for unexpected submissions
- Delete expired vouchers: Clean up old links to minimize attack surface
